Do you smoke or vaporize your cannabis?
Did you know there is a method of inhaling and exhaling that will help you get the most out of your session? Yes, there is! In the old days (aka the ’70’s and ’80’s) we were told to inhale, then hold your breath for as long as possible. Supposedly this was the way to get a better quality “high” out of smoking. Actually, all that accomplishes is holding toxins and carcinogens in our lungs for a longer period of time. There was also the risk of passing out from not breathing properly. There was no difference in the psychoactive effect.
What is the best way to inhale?
Instead of inhaling and holding your breath, take a long, deep inhalation. Approximately two-thirds of the inhalation will be with the vaporizer (pipe or blunt) in your mouth. When that is done, remove that from your mouth. Continue the last third by inhaling pure fresh air. Inhaling fresh oxygen from the air in the same breath as inhaling smoke or vapor helps in a few ways. The absorption of THC doesn’t begin to occur until the smoke or vapor actually enters your lungs.
What is the best way to exhale?
Did you know that most terpene receptors are in your nose? Don’t forget the importance of terpenes and the importance of the entourage effect. One school of thought tells us to exhale through the nose since most terpene receptors are there. The negative side to that is our noses are more sensitive. Exhaling through your nose some of the time may be the best answer.

A long, deep inhalation will help our lungs. When I inhale from my vape or pipe, I do it mindfully, sitting down, being in a calm place and taking a nice deep breath in. This not only helps my lungs on that inhale, it also helps me remember to take nice deep breaths more often. Many of us don’t breathe correctly, so its nice to take the time to breathe well.
